38 yorkepeninsula.com.au | moonta and moonta bay Sunset, Moonta Bay Moonta 165 kilometres from Adelaide map reference D5 Moonta’s origins in 1860 were very fortunate – a shepherd noticed traces of copper on a wombat burrow, which led to the establishment of the Moonta Mining Company that soon became one of the richest copper mines in Australia. The ensuing flood of skilled miners from Cornwall changed SA’s cultural mix. Apart from contributing to an economic explosion, the immigrants, affectionately known as Cousin Jacks and Jennies, eventually gave us Kernewek Lowender, the world’s largest Cornish festival, held biennially. It’s a festival of all things Cornish, from the pasties to the Swanky (miner’s beer) and ginger pop, and is an SA treasure. The Moonta Mines Museum, in the Moonta Mines Model School, built around 1878, is well worth a visit and on weekends a tourist train will take you around the heritage areas. Moonta Bay 169 kilometres from Adelaide map reference D5 A short distance to the west of Moonta, find Moonta Bay. The sandy coves, stunning beaches, jetty and clear blue waters complete the idyllic panorama of Moonta Bay. It’s also one of the best places to view the sun setting. 1/9th Ad royAl hotel Hosts Dennis and Jenny Liddy 2 Ryan Street, Moonta Ph: (08) 8825 2108 Fax: (08) 8825 2633 Email: email@example.com • Bistro dining 7 days • Daily lunch and tea specials • New dining room with alfresco outside courtyard • Brand new gaming room • TAB • Foxtel • Juke box and pool table • Front bar and saloon bar • Pub accommodation – 10 rooms • Courtesy bus • Fully serviced drive-through bottle shop • Pints for schooners every Saturday 1/9th Ad 2 Hughes Avenue, Moonta Bay PO Box 295, Kadina SA 5554 Ph: (08) 8823 3166 Fax: (08) 8821 1686 Email: firstname.lastname@example.org www.cliffhouse.com.au AAAt New modern, self-contained villas with spectacular clifftop views overlooking beach and jetty.
