In 1876, this remarkable invention ended the laborious, backbreaking work of clearing mallee stumps. The rich limestone soils soon produced bumper crops and Yorke Peninsula became known as the ‘Barley Capital of the World’. It’s still one of the richest wheat and barley regions in the world and many of the biggest breweries in Australia, Europe and Asia use malted barley from this region. Until the early 20th century, the only way to transport this cereal to Britain was by ship, and windjammers were a common sight along the coastline. The Wallaroo Heritage & Nautical Museum, Port Victoria’s Maritime Museum and the Edithburgh Museum all provide visitors with a vivid insight into the fascinating history of these amazing times. Enjoy the stories of pioneer aviator, Captain Harry Butler by visiting the National Trust Museum in Minlaton, home to his infamous monoplane – Red Devil – believed to be the only genuine one of its kind left in the world.
