25 kadina and lower light | yorkepeninsula.com.au Kadina 149 kilometres from Adelaide map reference E5 Kadina is the largest town on Yorke Peninsula – large enough to have suburbs called Jerusalem, Jericho, Matta Flat, Newtown, Kadina East and Wallaroo Mines. In its heyday, in the late 19th century, Kadina had a boomtown population of 20,000. In 1859, copper was discovered near Kadina. This brought many skilled Cornish miners and their families to the region, who left a mark that can still be seen in this area of Yorke Peninsula today. Over the years, Kadina has been the unofficial capital of Little Cornwall, the Copper Triangle and now the Copper Coast; each name a true testament to the region’s mining past and cultural origins, celebrated biennially at Kernewek Lowender, the Copper Coast Cornish Festival. Eventually mining ceased and farming took over as the mainstay industry. To learn more about this part of Kadina’s diverse history visit The Farm Shed Museum & Tourism Centre. Kadina's Royal Exchange Hotel was simply the Exchange Hotel until the Duke of Clarence stayed here in 1880. The Duke is considered a suspect in perhaps the most infamous murder case of all. So did Jack the Ripper once spend the night in Kadina, surrounded by slumbering Cousin Jacks? On a lighter note, Kadina offers several good shopping options. Lower Light 49 kilometres from Adelaide map reference G8 Located near River Light, which runs through the Adelaide Plains, Lower Light is a tonic for weary travellers. Fill up your car and stretch your legs at the service station, or grab a bite to eat and have a chat with the locals at the friendly pub. If you’re bored with driving, there’s always skydiving to get your heart racing. On the way to Yorke Peninsula, the parachute club is on your right, just past Lower Light. If you look up while going past, you might spot some of its members in the air. 2 Forster Street, Kadina Ph: (08) 8821 2582 MCDONALD’S KADINA Purchase a Standard McCafé® Coffee and receive a FREE McCafé Muffin Valid until 31/12/15 at McDonald’s Kadina.
